Beginning from Sankri Village in Uttarkashi district, the trek to Kedarkantha is perfect to undertake during winter season. Located within a protected sanctuary, Kedarkantha is widely known for its beautiful campsites. This is a snow trek that is lined with walnut and pine forests, and open meadows. Once at the summit, you’ll be blown away with the 360 degree view of famous mountain summits.
Route: Dehradun — Sankri – Juda-ka-Talab – Kedarkantha Base – Kedarkantha Peak – Hargaon – Sankri
Day 1: Dehradun to Sankri
On the first day, we will drive from Dehradun to Sankri, the base from where the trek begins. Overnight stay in guest-house or homestay to prepare for trek the next day.
Day 2 : Sankri to Juda ka Talab (9000 ft. , 5km)
Today will be the first day of the trek, and you will be walking 5km. The trek will begin after you are educated about a few dos and donts about trekking. We start walking along thick pine forest and an easy ascend. This area is excellent to spot birds like woodpecker. After this, you’ll enter the first meadow of the trip, from where we walk one more hour. This last hour will bring a drastic change in view as you’ll gain altitude. From here, you can spot Himalayas including Swargarohini peak. We spend the remaining evening and night at Juda ka Talab basecamp.
Day 3: Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp (11,200 ft., 4km)
Today, we first visit the pristine Juda Ka Talab lake that is a beautiful sight no matter what season you visit. If you’re going in winter, you can even slide across the frozen lake. After spending some time here, we head towards the base camp. At so much height, you will now encounter a steeper gradient than the day before. A 2-3 hours of walk will get you to the beautiful campsite. From the base camp, you can see Himalayas glistening under moonlight; nights here are always memorable.
Day 4: Kedarkantha Base Camp – Kedarkantha (12,500 ft. , 6km)
This is the day where all your hardwork will be rendered fruitful. Today is summit day. We will leave about 2am in the morning and head towards Kedarkantha. You will walk across snow slopes, from where the summit is about 4 hours away. Once at the summit, immerse into a 360 degree view of Himalayas, the sky painted in sunrise hues and a feeling of achievement that is indescribable. You’ll see prominent peaks like Swargarohini, Black Peak and Bandarpooch peaks. After spending time at the summit, we will head down to Hargaon (8,450 ft., 6 km). The descent is a little steep but easy. We will camp overnight at Hargaon.
Day 5: Hargaon to Sankri and Dehradun (6km trek, 200km drive)
This is the last day of the trek where we return to our starting points, Sankri and Dehradun. Today is a very short trek, so can spend time in meadows clicking pictures and simply being at peace with the surroundings. Once at Sankri, a car will pick us up onward to Dehradun.
